Job Description

ACT Blade develops and commercialises a game-changing lightweight wind turbine blade.  Our patented technology uses an engineered textile to provide the outer aerodynamic surface, cutting product weight and cost. The company is developing its manufacturing facility in Brindisi in Italy, where we will develop the first product, the ACT100 blade.

ACT Blade is looking for a Wind Turbine Blade Aerodynamicist to develop and design the complex aerodynamic surfaces on our Textile covered Wind Turbine Blades.  As part of the Design Team, your role is pivotal in securing that our products deliver high performance in the field over their design lifetime.

The candidate must have good attitude to carry out challenging tasks and be flexible with good communication skills in English and Italian and an entrepreneurial mentality.

Key responsibilities

As part of the ACT Blade Design team, the Wind Turbine Blade Aerodynamicist will be responsible for:

  • Developing and designing various aerodynamic systems for ACT Blades.
  • Developing 2D aerodynamic profiles for use with aeroelastic textile skin using
  • 2D and 3D aerodynamic simulation to improve performance.
  • Design, implementation, and post-processing of wind tunnel / on-turbine measurement campaigns.
  • Research and development of technologies for future products to further improve performance and reliability.
  • Define and maintain design and testing documentation for certification.
  • Propose innovative solutions, identifying, creating, and filing ideas pertaining to products and processes.
  • Actively contributing to product development by participating in design and review meetings.
  • Supervise the technical construction and experimental tests of prototypes.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, suppliers, and partners.
  • Technical Risk management.
  • Contribute to the Product Life Cycle development and management.
  • Help to define and maintain design standard and communication standards both internally and externally.

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (BSc/BEng) in Aerodynamics or Aerodynamic Engineering – master or PhD preferred.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience with wind turbine blade aerodynamics and testing.
  • Excellent understanding of Aerodynamic systems, principles, and practices.
  • Competent user of aerodynamic simulation methods including XFOIL and OpenFoam.
  • Capable of writing basic and advanced software tools in Python or MATLAB to automate parameter variations and optimisation routines, but also to analyse large datasets from test campaigns.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a dynamically evolving team.
  • Must be fluent in English and Italian and able to write reports.

Preferred requirements

  • Working experience within the Dassault 3D Experience environment using Abaqus, Apriso, Catia and their PLM system.
  • Working knowledge of structural design principles and practices including aero-elastaic structures
  • Practical experience of test campaigns.
  • Wind turbine blade design
