Job Description
ACT Blade develops and commercialises a game-changing lightweight wind turbine blade. Our patented technology uses an engineered textile to provide the outer aerodynamic surface, cutting product weight and cost. The company is developing its manufacturing facility in Brindisi in Italy, where we will develop the first product, the ACT100 blade.
ACT Blade is looking for a Senior Composite Design Engineer to develop the detailed design of our composite component. This involves a simultaneous engineering approach alongside the development of the other blade systems, with novel integration within the composite structure, as well as working alongside the manufacturing engineering team to deliver a design that works for our blade build process. As Senior Composite Design Engineer you will play a key role as ACT Blade grows in establishing internal design standards and processes and shaping future concepts and design decisions. Knowledge and experience of 3D composite ply design, 2D drawing standards, and GD&T are essential for this role. Previous experience within the wind blade industry will be advantageous.
The candidate must have good attitude to carry out challenging tasks and be flexible with good communication skills in English and Italian.
Key Responsibilities
As part of the ACT Blade Design team, the Senior Composite Design Engineer will be responsible for:
- Detailed design of composite structures within the ACT Blade
- Lead continuous improvement of ACT Blade’s composite design process through the creation and maintenance of internal standards such as design guides, design checklists.
- Manage technical risks and troubleshoot any issues with designs.
- Deliver R&D project on novel solutions to design problems
- Working in a simultaneous engineering environment
- Delivering design documentation including DFMEAs, DVPs and design description documents
- Work with the supply chain to deliver a low-cost, low tact design for manufacture.
- Specify requirements for jigs & tooling.
- Standardisation of materials, parts, components, sub-assemblies, and products
- Contribute to product lifecycle development & management.
Key Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS/BEng) in Mechanical/ Aerospace/ Materials/ Marine/ Automotive Engineering. OR a quantifiable and traceable career development path that has led to equivalent positions in other reputable Blade manufacturing companies.
- A minimum of FIVE years’ experience in a composite design role
- Experience of 3D CAD composite design (Catia V5/3dx preferred)
- Experience with PLM systems
- Strong understanding of composite design requirements and best practice
- Strong understanding of composite manufacturing processes and Design for Manufacture requirements
- Independent working able to lead the detailed design of composite structures.
- Experience leading design reviews.
- Strong understanding of 2D drawing standards and tolerances
- Experience designing co-moulded composite structures and bonded joint design.
- Strong written and oral communication in English and Italian
Desirable skills
- Experience of CAD automation
- Experience of composite design for wind blades
- Strong understanding of composite materials engineering & testing
